Yesterday, whilst walking the simple three mile span with Jake--- I got cramps. You know, those pains normal runners get at, say, mile five? Yes, well I got these cramps while WALKING. Which leaves me questioning, will I be able to suck it up when actually RUNNING?
The Fitness Motivator tells me this:
"There are many types of cramps that runners may experience. The majority of them can be classified as either muscle or ‘side-stitch’. Muscle cramps can occur from a lack of stretching or loosening of the muscles (attempting to go too quick too soon). They can also occur from dehydration and/or an electrolyte deficiency. In fact, heat cramps are one of the warning signs for heat exhaustion and should be treated immediately by drinking some water or a sports drink.Another cause of cramps is shallow breathing which ultimately leads to a lack of oxygen. To help the ‘side-stitch’ go away, take some deep breaths. Starting a race too quickly and being out of breath can lead to this most notorious runner's cramp. With proper conditioning and gradual intensity increases, this type of cramp should go away. Another common cause of cramps is eating too much or not enough before a race or workout. Some foods that take longer to digest (meat, dairy, fats,,) could be in your stomach for hours and will likely make their presence known if you chose to “eat & run”."
So, to summarize, I am probably guilty of each of these "side-stitch" causing demotivators.
Stretching seems like a nuisance. I mean, who wants to bend all the way down, bend all the way up, change position. Gosh, I'm getting tired just talking about it.
As far as dehydration goes, I've been trying. I don't drink soda or sugary anything, and lately I feel like a humpback whale with an over-active blowhole. I consume MASSIVE amounts of water but mmmm.... de-consume pretty quickly. So what the heck Body! Keep that hydrogen-oxygen wet stuff in there!
Being a vegetarian, I don't have well, any, meats in my stomach. But dairy? I mean come on. How the heck else do you expect me to get protein? I consume enough beans as it is and upping my bean intake would probably just create bigger issues for those around me. Nuts maybe? Looks like peanut butter for the pre-workout meal.
Today will present the first timing issue as I have been scheduled to work the oh-so-awesome late shift at the coffeehouse. Because of this, Jake and I decided to do our workout at noon, which wont be bad. I do feel like this indicates future endeavors, though.
What will I do when I don't have Jake to keep me to my schedule?
How the heck will I be able to set aside more than an hour for running. I mean, I hate it enough already, but the idea of two, three, four hour training sessions seems as likely to plan as it is that I'll actually enjoy it.
In any case, I'm taking it in stride. Or at least slow bursts.
Gotta run,
Brooke
